THIRTEEN

Hayley sliced her arm as she thrust her body through the front entrance that had thick shards of glass jutting out. A cry, a whimper, and then only the sound of her boots as she rushed through the darkened hallways of Guardino Elementary School looking for a place to hide. It was a large two story brown building with more than enough places to hide. Frantically her eyes scanned the rooms. She tried several but they were locked. Casting a glance over her shoulder she heard them shouting.

“Which way did she go?”

“You go that way.”

Next came the sound of a metal being dragged along stone.

Hayley rushed up to the last corner she came around and took a peek. Sure enough, a little way up the next corridor, the silhouette of a figure could be seen ambling down the corridor looking through the door windows.

“Come out, come out, wherever you are.”

Hayley did her best to remain quiet as she shuffled down the corridor to the next corner. She moved around it and her eyes widened. At the far end, another one was holding what looked like an award, taken from a cabinet on the wall. They tossed it and smashed what little glass remained in the cabinet.

Hayley pulled back just as they turned her way. Stuck in a U-shape corridor with two of them heading her way from either side, she was petrified. Her eyes scanned the walls, floors, lockers for anything that could be used as a weapon. There was nothing. Darting towards the gym, she slid inside just as she heard their boots approaching. They’d heard her. Closing the door behind her quietly, she walked backwards, keeping her eyes on it. That’s when she saw some skipping ropes in a bin off to the side. She rushed over and grabbed several and took them to the door and tied them around the handles to hold the doors together. No sooner had she done it than a loud bang against the door pushed it in. They were trying to force their way in. Fortunately, the rope kept the doors from opening. They could only open a few inches and from within the gap she saw a person’s eye staring at her.

“Little pig, little pig, let me in.”

“Go away!” Hayley screamed. She heard them laugh.

For a second there was silence, then they continued tormenting her.

“Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll fucking rip your throat out.”

They began banging on the doors, and then she saw a knife come through the gap in the door and begin hacking away at the rope.

“Why are you doing this?”

They didn’t reply. She turned to run towards another door in the corner of the gym only to see a figure emerge holding what appeared to be a fireman’s axe. They raised it and smacked it against their hand. Hayley put her hands up.

“Look, you don’t have to do this. I know people that can help.”

The rope snapped as the other person cut it and burst through the door holding a large bowie knife.
